The Financial Freedom Course & Tools

For sole proprietor service providers in BC

Practising your craft is one thing... running the business is a whole other ball game...

You spend your days helping people feel ease in their lives, but now it’s time to bring that same ease to your finances.

The Financial Freedom Course gives you straight-talking, no-fluff information about taxes and finances from an RMT who’s been navigating sole proprietor life in BC for 17 years.

Build the solid foundation you need to get organized, ask the right questions, go into tax season well prepared, and know when to call a pro.

And naturally… there’s your choice of practical tools to match: The Tax Tracker and the Financial Freedom Blueprint.

The dilemma...

Many service providers share the same frustrations; we graduate with an incredible skill set for helping people, but feel less prepared for the financial side of running a business.

  • Income that comes in unevenly
  • Business expenses that pop up unexpectedly
  • Tax instalments and GST that can be easy to underestimate
  • The last minute hustle to get your bookkeeping done
  • Scrambling to pay that final tax bill for the year

And then you need to make sure there’s enough left over for your personal life, too!

It’s overwhelming—and without a clear system, it’s easy to slip into debt or constantly feel behind.

I've been there too!

AND, I put in the work and turned things around for myself

21 year old me - fresh out of my last written board exam

My experience...

I started my RMT business shortly after my 21st birthday, and I felt completely unprepared.

Fully supporting myself for the first time, paying off student loans, and figuring out taxes while growing a practice?

It was a lot.

Over the years, I started educating myself on the different pieces of managing my money – I did a lot of research, I asked a lot of questions to professionals, and I went through a lot of trial and error…

For a while now, I’ve been out of debt, I have a strong emergency fund, and I can consistently and successfully plan ahead for taxes and big expenses without breaking a sweat.

I decided it was time to share what I’ve learned with my peers. That way, you can have more peace of mind as well!

Presenting...

What I wish had existed when I was getting started

The Financial Freedom Course

A series of intentionally laid out pre-recorded lessons introducing topics that build on each other.

Some of the topics covered include:

  • Creating structure and boundaries between business and personal money
  • Handling low revenue months with tax strategy in mind
  • Budgeting
  • Write-offs and bookkeeping
  • GST
  • Income taxes & tax brackets
  • Tax credits

And so much more…

The course gives you the understanding you need to better manage your finances and tax prep on your own.

When bundled with one of my spreadsheets, a lot of the heavy lifting — like organizing and summarizing — is done automatically in the background, saving you time.

This includes automating things like the math, organizing your entries, and turning everything into clean records your accountant can use.

Pick the tool of your choosing!

The Tax Tracker

The Tax Tracker is a smaller tax prep focused spreadsheet.

Walk in to tax season with your books long since done – walk out with some money to spare!

  • Monthly business expense entry
  • Monthly revenue & RRSP entry
  • Auto-generated summaries of your bookkeeping
  • Auto-calculated suggestions for monthly tax prep

*A freshly updated Tax Tracker with improvements or new features will be available each new year with your active subscription ($20 + GST)

The Financial Freedom Blueprint (FFB)

The Financial Freedom Blueprint (FFB) is a larger spreadsheet that offers everything in the Tax Tracker and more...

  • Set and track savings goals
  • Plan around your variable income
  • Tackle your debt strategically
  • Know where your dollars are going

*A freshly updated Financial Freedom Blueprint with improvements or new features will be available each new year with your active subscription ($80 + GST)

The spreadsheets are delivered as Google Sheets spreadsheets. You will need a Gmail account to use them. They can then be downloaded to Excel on your computer if you choose. 2024 (and later) versions of Excel are compatible with the formulas in the spreadsheets. I have not tested earlier versions of Excel.

The spreadsheets are membership based – automatically renewing each year for the cost of the spreadsheet you chose until you choose to cancel your membership. Community calls will be available as part of the membership.

Considerations & FAQs

Target Audience: The Tax Tracker, Financial Freedom Blueprint and Financial Freedom Course are designed for sole proprietorship service providers in BC.

Purpose: The Tax Tracker, Financial Freedom Blueprint and Financial Freedom Course are intended to provide structure and guidelines to help service providers plan and track their financial goals and prepare for tax season confidently.

PDP Credits: Unfortunately the College governing BC RMTs does not recognize business related education as an acceptable learning activity for PDP goals.

Timeline: The Tax Tracker and the Financial Freedom Blueprint spreadsheets are designed to be used from January 1-December 31. A fresh spreadsheet will be available each new year – currently via repurchasing, eventually via an auto-renewal membership on Thinkific.

DIY Bookkeeping: Many service providers prefer to manage their own books, so there are bookkeeping summary pages towards the end of the spreadsheet document. As you enter your monthly expenses, the spreadsheet will compile all expenses categorized the same way and give grand totals on a printer-friendly page that you can hand over to your accountant at tax time.

Expense Tracking: You can enter all business expenses in the tracker. If an expense is not a full write off, or you’re unsure if it is a write off at all, you can choose to exclude it from that month’s tax planning estimator calculations – this keeps your monthly tax prep on the safe side, but still lists these purchases in your bookkeeping summaries for your accountant to see. Just make sure all partial expenses or potentially non-eligible expenses are categorized in a way that will make them stand out in the bookkeeping summaries. *This will be covered in more detail in the tutorials.

Scope: The Tax Planning Estimators in the Tax Tracker and The Financial Freedom Blueprint spreadsheets create estimations using only your business revenue, the business expenses you’ve confidently included in that month’s plan, and the RRSP contributions you entered in the estimator. Other income sources or tax write-offs like medical expenses and child care costs are not taken into consideration.

Tax Estimations: All GST, CPP and provincial and federal tax estimations are just that – estimates.

The Tax Tracker merely points out how much GST you collected and should set aside. The Financial Freedom Blueprint does the same AND provides estimates for the Quick Method GST and Regular Method GST remittance. (In 2027, the Tax Tracker will too).

*It is best practice to set all GST collected aside until you confirm what you need to remit each quarter, or at tax time if you file annually.

The monthly Tax Planning Estimators do not take the Basic Personal Amount tax credits into account. Instead, they have you setting tax prep money aside from the first dollar you earn. This is what creates that ‘forced savings’ effect and will have you very comfortably prepared for tax season.

Limitations: The Tax Tracker and Financial Freedom Blueprint spreadsheets are not substitutes for personalized guidance from financial professionals. Human error, misuse, or incorrect data input may affect the accuracy of the estimations. The aim is to keep you generously prepared and well organized—not to have you filing your own taxes. A bookkeeper can catch mistakes by reviewing every receipt, whereas an accountant usually works from summaries and won’t see the smaller errors. Without that professional review, you carry full responsibility with the CRA.

Technical Requirements: The Tax Tracker and Financial Freedom Blueprint spreadsheets are delivered as Google Sheets, so you will need a Google/Gmail account to access them.
